In this first module, we begin by gently unpacking what compersion actually is and what it is not.
Compersion is often spoken about as a feeling you should be able to access if you are “doing nonmonogamy right.” This module moves away from that framing and instead offers a grounded, compassionate understanding of compersion as a capacity that can be developed over time, within the context of your lived experience.
You will explore the origins of the term compersion, common myths and misunderstandings about it, and the ways it is often incorrectly positioned as the opposite of jealousy or as a requirement for healthy nonmonogamy. Rather than asking you to perform compersion or bypass difficult emotions, this module invites you to build a relationship with compersion that is realistic, contextual, and humane.
Through reflection prompts, body-based awareness, and values-centered inquiry, you will begin to identify how compersion shows up for you now, where it feels accessible, and where it feels out of reach. This module lays the foundation for the rest of the curriculum by helping you define compersion on your own terms and assess your current capacity without judgment.
By the end of Module One, you will have:
A clear, nuanced understanding of compersion
Relief from the pressure to “feel it already”
Language to describe your experience without shame
A compassionate baseline from which to grow your capacity
This module sets the tone for the work ahead: slow, honest, embodied, and deeply respectful of your nervous system and your humanity.
